Winifred Botwick Kirstein, Aug. 15, 1917 to Nov. 3, 2012. Born in New Haven, CT. Graduated from Hillhouse High School and Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, NJ where she was awarded a scholarship to Teachers College of Columbia University. She was a founder and director of Solomon Schechter Academy in New London, CT. She was a president of the sisterhood and a director of Beth Jacob synagogue in Norwich, CT. She was a founding member of the Norwich Committee for Resettlement of Soviet Jewry and served as chairman and treasurer of the Women’s Division of the Norwich United Jewish Appeal for many years. She was a life member of Hadassah, a member of B’Nai Brith and the City of Hope. She was a member of the CT Board of the National Women’s league for 15 years, serving also as vice president and Israel Affairs Chairperson. She was predeceased by her husband, Abraham Joseph Kirstein of Norwich, CT. She is survived by two children: Judy (Jimmy) Rogoff and Harold (Gail) Kirstein, four grandsons, Eric Rogoff and Evan (Jodi) Rogoff, Brent (Leah) Kirstein and Zachary Kirstein; two great-grandsons, Andrew and Ari Rogoff. The funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 5 at Beth Jacob Synagogue in Norwich, attended by Weinstein Mortuary of Hartford, CT, 860-233-2675. Shiva will follow at 1 Trading Cove Circle, Norwich and Tuesday 7-9 p.m. at Gail and Harold Kirstein’s home at 590 Deercliff Rd., Avon, CT.
