Theodor ('Ted' Max) Simon

d. January 1, 1970

Theodor (Ted) Max Simon of Geraldine Drive Coventry, beloved husband of Marjorie (Gaber) Simon, died at home on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Essen, Steele, Germany in 1922, Ted fled the Holocaust with his family, settling in Brazil in 1935 with his father Moritz Simon, his mother, Martha (David) Simon and his beloved siblings, Hannah Brandt of São Paulo, Brazil and Ernesto Simon (d. 2017). Ted was a long-time resident of West Hartford until he and Marge moved to an apartment which their son Eric Simon built for them adjacent to his home in Coventry twelve years ago. Ted always said he lived in the best assisted living facility in the country! Ted came to the United States from Brazil for the first time in 1953 to study at UCONN where he met Marge, a nurse from Winsted, CT, daughter of Leah (Grossman) Gaber and Morris Gaber. They were married for 57 years when she died in 2011. Ted spent the last years of his working life at Universal Design in Hartford where he worked as an intermediary between temporary technical specialists and companies that needed their services. Meanwhile, Ted completed his university studies at the University of Hartford night school, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Psychology in 1967. Ted and Marge’s home was open to people from far and wide. They created a family with hearts and minds open to a world without boundaries. His children, Anita, and husband Lars, Eric and wife Sandye, and Tom and wife Deborah. Edward Kofi Osei, his AFS exchange student son, and his wife Joyce, seven grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren are scattered over many countries and have been a great joy to him. Ted’s passions were art, music and competition swimming. As a Masters Swimmer he had 20 years in the top 10 of his age group. He stopped competitive swimming at age 94. He loved good music, and it kept him company and was his joy and his consolation always. He was a member of a book group and of the Coventry Garden Club until he died. To his great joy, the friends he made were with him until the end. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 10 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, followed by interment in the Star Benevolent Association Cemetery, Stillson St, Waterbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Marge Simon to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2075 Silas Deane Hgwy., Suite 100, Rocky Hill 06067, or to United by Friendship at unitedbyfriendship.org.
