Sylvia (Denowitz) Rosenberg

Sylvia Denowitz Rosenberg of Seabury Dr., Bloomfield died Thursday, January 24, 2008 after a long illness. She was the widow of Ben D. Rosenberg, the love and light of her life. She left this world having celebrated the simple pleasures of life every day. Sylvia was born in Springfield, MA to the late Theodore and Mary (Katz) Denowitz on April 20, 1920. She moved to Hartford as a school girl, graduating from Weaver High School, class of 1938. After secretarial school, she went to work at Nemirow Brothers, a wholesale candy and tobacco business. It was there she met her wonderful Ben. After their marriage and the birth of their first daughter, their life was turned upside down when Ben was called to serve in World War II. The hardship and sacrifices of the war years were both difficult and sad. Sylvia was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. During the early years of her married life, she was a homemaker supreme. She took great pride in her family, home, and kitchen. She also enjoyed volunteering in the Girl Scouts, PTA, Emanuel Synagogue and its Sisterhood, and Hadassah. She then returned to the work force at Travelers, HPHS Annex, and retired from the Annie Fisher School in Hartford. In her retirement she overcame a lifelong fear of water and learned to swim. She took an active role at the Jewish Center, where she not only swam, but also enjoyed a variety of classes, folk dancing, SES, travels, and wonderful friendships. Sylvia was a master knitter and in her life made hundreds of beautiful items, including afghans, baby sweaters, and lap robes for shut-ins. Her cooking was also world famous. From holiday groaning boards to daily baked specials, there was always love, laughter, and delicious food at her table. She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Marc and Nancy Bazilian of West Hartford, and Janice Rosenberg of Maynard, MA; and her cherished grandchildren: Morgan and Deborah Bazilian of Dublin, Ireland, Jason and Wendy Bazilian of San Diego, CA, and Jennifer Rosenberg of Studio City, CA. She also leaves a dear friend and sister-in-law, Muriel Denowitz of Delray Beach, FL; her cousins and wonderful friends, Helen Mehlman and Jessie Rosenthal; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her adored brothers, Jack Denowitz and Hecky Denowitz. She also leaves a special Seabury friend, Dotty Nordstrom. The family wishes to thank her caregivers at Seabury-Brewer for their tender loving care and devotion during her confinement. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi David J. Small officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. A memorial period will be observed at the Bazilians? home on Sunday, following the funeral and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seabury Charitable Foundation, 200 Seabury Dr., Bloomfield 06002, or to the Ben & Sylvia Rosenberg Fund at the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Dr., West Hartford 06117.
