Sydney (Hurwitz) Mittau died peacefully at the Hebrew Home and Hospital in West Hartford at the age of 105. She was born in Manchester, England, the daughter of Mendle and Sarah Hurwitz. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Felix; four brothers, Reuben, Barney, Sol and David; two sisters, Jean and Rae. She leaves beloved nieces and nephews whom she loved as if they were her own children. They are Sandy and Paul Later, Payson and Barbara Hurwitz, Muriel and Bennet Hyne, Frances and Jerry Glazier, Stuart and Joan Hurwitz, Ida Lee Hurwitz, Harold and Greta Hurwitz, Eliot and Kathy Mag, Margie and Norman Andrews, Joan and Sam Karff. Aunt Syd was a woman of the 21st century, born in the 20th century. She attended Trinity College, was an Electrologist in business with her sister, Jean and continued her studies into her late 80th year of life. Her second home was Temple Beth Israel which she truly loved. She was an active participant in the Temple and was the Historian for many years. Aunt Syd taught the Jewish Studies program in sign language at the American School for the Deaf enabling the Jewish children to be confirmed in their religion. She was honored by the Jewish Family Service for her dedication and devotion which extended beyond teaching, including dinners, Hanukkah parties, and Hanukkah gifts for the children. Aunt Syd made a difference in this world, and will not be forgotten! The family wishes to thank all staff at the Hebrew Home and Hospital. She moved to all floors and the staff loved her interaction and sense of humor. There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m. on Wednesday March 28 at the Beth Israel Cemetery, corner of Ward and A ffleck St. in Hartford. Family will receive friends following the funeral at the home of Sandy and Paul Later, 37 Craigmoor Rd., West Hartford. In her memory, contributions may be made to the Hebrew Home and Hospital or to the Library Fund at the Beth Israel Synagogue. Weinstein Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
