Shirley (Rubin) Weiner

I. Shirley Weiner, a resident of West Hartford CT and Palm Beach FL, passed away peacefully at her home in West Hartford on March 28th at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her loving husband Charles Weiner, with whom she shared her life for more than 75 years, and by her elder son Robert Wyner. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Shirley will be missed by her daughter Andrea Gargiulo and husband Richard of Boston MA, son Rick Weiner and wife Rhode van Gessel of Essex CT, daughter-in-law Shirley Wyner of Palm Beach FL, granddaughter Alison Strong and husband Geoffrey of Manhattan NY, grandson John Gargiulo and wife Sidney of Palo Alto CA, and grandson Schuyler Weiner of Essex CT. She was predeceased by her grandson Jason Wyner. In addition, she leaves great-grandsons Alexander and Henry Strong and Jack Gargiulo. Shirley was a member of Congregation Beth Israel for over 50 years and was a long-time member of Tumblebrook Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf in her younger years and was known for her steady swing. The daughter of Lillian and Abraham Rubin, she was raised in Hartford with her brothers Sidney and Robert who predeceased her. Shirley graduated from Weaver High School where she and Charles met and became sweethearts. They were married on December 31st, 1939 and celebrated the occasion in Manhattan at Times Square. For the next 73 years they never failed to go out to celebrate New Year’s Eve, their anniversary, always staying at the party well past midnight. Contributions may be made in her memory to Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave, West Hartford, CT 06119. A private graveside service is planned with arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
