Shirley D. (Snitman) Lebowitz, 87 years of age, of West Hartford, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Bessie (Segal) Snitman. She was the widow of Edward Lebowitz who died in 2003. Shirley graduated from Weaver High School, class of 1941. She was in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp and graduated New Britain General Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She was a member and organizer of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut, and served on the NFB National Board. She also was a past member of the CT Board of Education Services for the Blind; a member of the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary Laurel Post 45; and a member of Temple Sinai, Newington. She leaves her daughters: Joyce Lebowitz-Sturm and her husband, Myron, and Cynthia Lang and her husband Bob Stavnezer; grandsons: David Sturm, Jeffrey Sturm, and Aaron Lang, all of West Hartford. She also leaves a sister Irma Flitt of New London, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brother Melvin Snitman. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 1:00 PM in the Sanctuary of Temple Sinai, 41 West Hartford Road, Newington with Rabbi Jeffrey Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Rd., East Granby. A memorial period will be observed at her home following the interment and Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-8 pm.
