Selma (Waxman) Widem, 86, Beloved wife, mother and grandmother died Thursday June 4th, 2015. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Hilda (Marmer) Waxman. She graduated from the Soleberry School in Pennsylvania and graduated with a Bachelors degree from Syracuse University in 1951. She was a school teacher in East Hartford and then went on to become a social worker for the Connecticut Department of Welfare with handling adoptions of abused and neglected children. In 1951, she married the love of her life, the late I. Milton Widem, a prominent Hartford attorney. A devoted and loving mother to Lawrence G. Widem and his wife, Beth Slosberg of West Hartford and Susan Widem of Los Angeles, California. She was predeceased by her sister, Faye (Waxman) Block. A cherished grandmother to Samuel and Gabriel Widem of West Hartford. She was a member of the Beth El Sisterhood and co-chair of the Art Show Committee. The Family would like to thank her dedicated and loving caregivers Mildred Johnson and Dianne Bailey. The family is also grateful to the supportive staff of St. Mary’s Home, West Hartford and the medical staff of Hartford Hospital. For their friendship and support to her wonderful neighbors and friends especially Ellen Sanders Nirenstein. Funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of The Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Dr, West Hartford, CT 06117 on Sunday, June 7th at 11 AM, internment will follow at The Emanuel Cemetery, Wethersfield. Following the internment family will receive friends and family at the family home 60 Brewster Road, West Hartford. A period of morning will be observed at the family home from Sunday through Thursday 7-9 pm. Donations may be made to the UCONN Law School Foundation / I. Milton Widem Scholarship Fund or the Widem Special Needs Fund at The Emanuel Synagogue or at a charity of your choosing. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT.
