Ruth (Schulman) Steinman

Ruth Steinman, 88, wife of the late Louis Steinman, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (August 8 , 2006) at Kimbery Hall Convalescent Home from the ravages of old age. A gentle and spiritual person, at home in the world of nature and ideas, Ruth echewed the values of materialist society to live a life of service to others, books and horticulture and after retirement, as a long time volunteer at the Windsor Public Libray. When she first moved to Windsor, almost 60 years ago, she, along with some of the few Jewish families to join the post-war move to the suburbs, helped organize and found the Beth Ahm synagogue still operating today. A strong believer in the equality of the sexes she went out to work in the fifties at a time when it was the norm for women to stay at home and be housekeepers, eventually managing singlehandedly the business operations of the Henry Joseph Company, from which she retired after more than 25 years. She leaves behind a son, Stuart in California, a daughter, Glyn Cassorla for whom she was an inspiration and a granddaughter Alison Cassorla who loved her cookies and everything else about her. There will be a graveside service at the Wolkowysker Society Cemetery, Tower Avenue, Hartford at 1 p.m. TODAY. Arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
