Ruth Levin Merblum of West Hartford died peacefully at the age of 98 on Sunday, April 30. She was the beloved wife for 65 years of the late Howard A. Merblum. Born in Springfield, MA, she was the youngest daughter of the late Samuel and Mamie Levin. Ruth was truly a life force. She was magnetic, quick witted, razor sharp and had a contagious energy that far surpassed her petite frame. She was a musician, an avid concert goer and an opera connoisseur. Her great love of art took her to museums near and far. Her days began with the New York Times and ended with crossword puzzles and novels. Ruth graduated from Wellesley College in 1939, majoring in organic chemistry. A long time member of the Hartford Bridge Club, she attained Life Master status, proudly partnering with her son Frank. At the age of 95, Ruth was the recipient of a special citation from the state of CT in honor of her 30 years of volunteer work at the West Hartford Public Library. Ruth cherished her role as a wife, mother, grandmother above all else. She leaves her loving son Franklin Merblum and his wife, Susan, of Bloomfield; her granddaughter Rebecca Merblum and her husband Bruce of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughter Christina Merblum, her husband Hugo and their son Henry of Zurich, Switzerland; grandsons Thomas Ferrero and his wife Kristen of Savannah, GA; Michael Hazard and his wife Cheryl of Windsor Locks; niece Carol Newman, her husband Stanley, their children Robert Newman and Jordana Newman Ashe as well as their families. In addition to her husband, Ruth was predeceased by her sister Elizabeth Feldman and brother Dr. Robert Levin. Ruth also leaves many dear friends whom she loved as family. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 4 at 12:30 pm at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Ave, West Hartford. The family will receive visitors following the service at the home of her son at 13 Butternut Drive, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the West Hartford Public Library. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
