Robert (A.) Weinerman

Robert A. Weinerman, 84, of Hartford, West Hartford and Palm Beach, FL, died October 21, 2006 at Hartford Hospital of complications from lymphoma. Born on July 23, 1922 in Hartford, son of the late Anna (Schwartz) and David Weinerman, Bob attended Noah Webster School and Hartford High. He was a graduate of the Loomis School in Windsor, later serving on its board of trustees and receiving their Distinguished Service Award in 1995. In 1944 he earned his B.A. from Yale University, and in 1948 he received his masters in engineering at M.I.T. His collegiate career was interrupted when he served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force, 1943-1946. Bob joined The Southern New England Contracting Company in 1948, assuming its presidency in 1954-1974. The construction company was a family owned business, founded in 1914 by his father. Some notable clients included G. Fox & Company, Saint Francis Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Hebrew Home for the Aged, and Trinity College. He served as Commissioner of Public Works for the State of Connecticut, 1974-1977; during his tenure Bob prided himself on his integrity, awarding contracts based on merit. In appreciation of his fair-mindedness, he received the Lay Person Award, presented by the Connecticut Society of Architects. From 1977-1994 he became a construction consultant, working with clients such as Hartford Steam Boiler, The University of Hartford and the Choate School. Bob valued and encouraged community activism, serving as President of the Boards of Directors at Duncaster Retirement Home, the Hartford Public Library, the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center and the Emanuel Synagogue. In recognition of his civic leadership, Bob received the Distinguished Service Award from the Hartford Jewish Federation (1954), the Herman Koppelman Award for outstanding leadership at the Emanuel Synagogue (1969) and the Outstanding Leadership Award by the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center (1970). In 1995 he was predeceased by his first wife, Harriet (Chaikind) Weinerman, with whom he shared 49 wonderful years. Together they raised three adoring children in Hartford on Westerly Terrace. In February, 1997 he married Judy Bergman, a devoted wife and source of strength for nearly ten years. In addition to his wife he is survived by his loving children, Lynne (Weinerman) Calder and her husband Chris of Fort Bragg, CA and her children, Zachary, Courtney, Leif and their father James Dahl; Dr. Harry Weinerman and his wife Hilary Meyers of West Hartford and their children, Rachel, Bennett and Aaron Meyers-Weinerman. He was predeceased by his eldest child, Leslie (Weinerman) Parker in 2001. Bob also leaves to mourn him his son-in-law, M. Donald Parker of West Hartford and their son, David Parker, and Don’s children, Scott, Cheryl and Brian Parker. He was predeceased by his older brother, Richard Weinerman and his wife, Shirley (Bash) Weinerman, in 1970 and their daughter, Diney. He also leaves his loving nephew, Jeff Wyman and his wife, Kelly; brother-in-law, Leonard Chaikind and his wife, Ellie; step-sons, David and John Bergman, and David’s wife, Stephanie, along with their three children, Zachary, Meredith and Amelia; nephew, Michael Chaikind and his wife, Faye Rosenbaum; niece, Janet Chaikind and her husband, Sandy Hain. The family extends heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care of Drs. Keating and Baker, and the Hartford Hospital Palliative Care staff. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 24th, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford with Rabbi David J. Small officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue cemetery, Wethersfield. The family will receive guests following the burial service at the home of Harry Weinerman, 51 Walbridge Rd., West Hartford. The family will sit Shiva at the same address on Wednesday, October 25th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Robert A.
