Rhoda (Shafter) Shifreen of Tabor Circle, West Hartford, formerly of Whitestone, NY, died Friday, January 20, 2012. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Bertha (Rabinowitz) Shafter. She was the widow of Seymour S. Shifreen. She was a graduate of New York University, Queens College, CUNY and Hofstra University. Mrs. Shifreen was a retired New York City elementary school teacher, and a professional artist. She was a member of Congregation B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom, Bloomfield, and life member of Hadassah who named her Ima of the year. She leaves her children: Dr. Steven Shifreen and his wife Julie of West Hartford, Franklin Shifreen of New York City, and Dawn Pomerantz of Lafayette, CA; and grandchildren Amanda and Aaron Shifreen and Eli and Briel Pomerantz. She also leaves a dear friend, Max Felder. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and Bernard Shafter. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Debra Cantor officiating. Interment will follow in the Tikvoh Chadoshoh Cemetery, Windsor. A memorial period will be observed at the home of Steven and Julie Shifreen, 85 High Wood Rd., West Hartford, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6-8 PM.
