Phyllis (Pava) Nussbaum

Phyllis (Pava) Nussbaum, 90 years of age, of Bloomfield passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2015. She was the widow of Charles Schwartz Nussbaum. She was born in Springfield, MA, the youngest child of the late Louis and Ida (Rosen) Pava, where she attended Classical High School and American International College. At college she met and married her beloved husband of 30 years. He died in 1981. Phyllis was the sister of the late Dr. Arthur Pava of Longmeadow, MA, and Abby Austern, who resides in Peabody, MA. She is survived by her daughter, Gale Dyer and her husband Harold of West Hartford; her son Seth Nussbaum and his wife Susan of Salt Lake City, UT; her grandchildren, Jennifer Maybaum and her husband Eric, Scott Nussbaum; and her great granddaughter, Reagan Coates. The family would like to express their appreciation to her care givers, Emelia Yeboah and Stella Badu. Phyllis was a talented and revered first grade teacher for 30 years in the Hartford Public School System. After retiring, she was a mentor to student teachers at St. Joseph College. She also taught first grade for many years at Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford where she served on the Library Board, The Caring Committee, and was twice president of the Sisterhood of the Congregation. She also taught English to Russian members of the Congregation and helped them to gain their US Citizenship. She also served as a Selectman for the Town of Bloomfield and she was a member of the Registrar of Voters. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 23, 2015 in the Silberman Chapel of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Interment will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Affleck St., Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
