Neil (J.) Grey

GREY, Neil J. Grey, M.D., 68, of Forest Hills Drive, West Hartford, died Friday, May 18, 2007 with his loving family by his bedside at Hartford Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Sol and Sara (Bressler) Grey. He graduated from Dartmouth College and received his medical degree from the State University of New York in Brooklyn. He did his Internship and Residency at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, OH; and his Fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Grey served as Major in the U.S. Army for two years in the Vietnam War. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and certified by the Board as an Endocrinologist. He was also certified in Addiction Medicine, and was a Certified Member of the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists. He was in private practice in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Grey founded and was the Director of Diabetes LifeCare at Hartford Hospital. He was consistently recognized and the recipient of many prestigious awards. In 1994 Dr. Grey was awarded the Hartford County Medical Association?s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Medal, at the Association?s 202nd Annual Meeting. His dedication to the medical community began when he became a Director of the Impaired Physicians Committee in 1983. Since then, he served as a member and chairman of various committees and as the association?s secretary/treasurer. In his role as chair of the Committee on Physician Health for both the Hartford County Medical Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society, Dr. Grey spent countless hours working with and on behalf of physicians who needed help in getting and staying well. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He was a key opinion leader in the field of diabetes and devoted much of his time sharing best practices with other clinicians. He was an investigator and co-author of several clinical research studies related to diabetes that were published in various medical journals. He was also a member of Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford. He was the loving husband of Joan (Spirn) Grey; beloved father of Jonathan E. Grey of Old Lyme, Elizabeth A. Burke with her husband Martin E. Burke of West Hartford, and Nancy R. Grey of New York, NY; cherished grandfather of Samantha C. and Martin E. Burke II; and brother of Phyllis Lichaw of Ft. Lee, NJ, and Stanley Grey with his wife Laurie Rosen of Smithtown, NY. Dr. Grey also leaves behind many close friends and patients for whom he cared for deeply. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 21, 2007 at 1:00 PM in the Sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Interment will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Avon. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday following the funeral and on Tuesday 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at his home.
