Nathan (A.) Geetter

Nathan A. Geetter, beloved by all who knew him, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2015. He was born on February 13, 1917, the son of Hayman and Adelle (Stolper) Geetter, one of seven children. Nate was a very good student and was elected to the National Honor Society while attending Hartford Public High School. After graduating in 1934 he attended the newly formed Hartford Federal College. Later he was employed at Albert Steiger Co. where he became the manager of their shoe department at the age of 22. He was introduced to the love of his life – Lillian Rosenfield – whom he married in October 1940. Theirs was an absolutely perfect marriage of 55 years. Lillian passed away on Nate’s 78th birthday.

Nate was inducted into the United States Air Force in 1943. After his discharge he became affiliated with the Hartford Freight Bureau, a pool car distributor of furniture. When the original founder and owner Samuel Himmelblau passed away, Nate assumed the ownership of the company staying with it for a total of forty years. He was highly respected by the furniture manufacturers, their representatives and the many furniture stores of New England. Nate was also very active in the West Hartford Boy Scouts organization for several years, affiliated with Troop 46 at the Whiting Lane School. He was awarded the Scouter’s Award for his devoted service.

Nate was very close to his brothers and sisters, all of whom are departed. They are Dr. Isadore (and Rebekah) Geetter, Maurice (and Claire) Geetter, Benjamin (and Gladys) Geetter, Morris and Sadie (Geetter) Davidson, Louis and Fay (Geetter) Weidman, and Leonard and Sylvia (Geetter) Levy. He was also predeceased by his dear son Dr. Philip Geetter and by his loving companion Sara Rowe. He leaves behind his devoted daughter Diane Zucker of Bloomfield; his daughterinlawHelene Geetter of Pipersville PA; six grandchildren – Erik, Todd, Courtney, and Chad Geetter, and David and Joshua Zucker; and seven great grandchildren – Audrey, Zachary, Troy, Owen, Isadora, Lillian, and Melody. Cherishing his memory also are many nephews and nieces, all of whom were very close to their “Uncle Nate.” One of his pastimes was compiling several family albums which he shared with all members of the Geetter family. He also left his children and grandchildren his collection of “Grandpa’s Magic Pumpkin Stories” as a legacy. Nate loved growing zinnias and tomatoes which he shared generously with his family and neighbors. He was often referred to as the patriarch of Maplewood Ave. Nate was a devoted member of the Congregation Beth Israel for more than 50 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 1, 2015 in the Chapel of theWeinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Cantor Pamela Siskin officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Rd., East Granby. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Congregation Beth Israel or to any charity of the donor’s choice. Following interment Shiva will be observed at 148 Maplewood Ave., West Hartford.
