Mona V. (Fox) Maizell, 85, of Avon, formerly of Hamden, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2013. Born in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Florence (Schultz) Fox. Mona was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 52 years, Robert E. Maizell, in 2007, and more recently, in November of this year, lost her brother, Gerald Fox of Texas. Mona received a Masters Degree in Urban Studies from Southern Connecticut State University and worked as a social worker for the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Families until she retired. Mona liked to be active; she and her husband traveled to many places such as Israel, London, Turkey, Alaska and Hawaii. Mona was an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women and was a lifetime member of Hadassah. She was an avid tennis player, and later in life, took up golfing. She enjoyed volunteering at the soup kitchen at St Ann’s Church in Hamden, going to aerobics classes, playing bridge and attending plays at Long Wharf Theater with her friends. Mona is survived by her two daughters, Susan Eisenberg and her husband William of West Simsbury, and Elizabeth Maizell of New Haven. She leaves her three granddaughters who she absolutely adored; Erica, Julie and Renee Eisenberg. The family would like to thank River Ridge at Avon for welcoming her into their community and making the last days of her life happy ones. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Congregation Mishkan Israel Cemetery, Jewell Street, New Haven, with Rabbi Herbert Brockman officiating. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at Cave A’vin Restaurant, 975 State St., New Haven, immediately following the interment. The family will be receiving visitors Monday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at their home.
