Mildred "Millie" Whipple

Mildred Whipple (nee Friedman) passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025 in West Hartford, CT one week shy of her 102nd birthday. She grew up in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn and graduated from New Utrecht High School in 1940 and was a bookkeeper for many years. She met her husband John, stationed in New Jersy, in New York City in 1943 prior to his being shipped to England. Being an avowed letter writer, she maintained a regular correspondence with him throughout the war and they married in 1948 after he returned home and completed his college degree.

Millie was predeceased by her parents, Meyer and Anna (Posner) Friedman, her three brothers and her sister. She is survived by her three children: Richard (Carole) Whipple of AZ, Peter (Linda) Whipple of WA and Joni (Tim) Peterson of Newington. Her four grandchildren: Anne (Eric) and Joel (Lauren) of MA, Elizabeth (Pasquale) and Matthew of WA. Her four great grandchildren: Jake and Patrick of MA and Giovanni and Naomi of WA. She enjoyed her family immensely and they made her life beautiful and complete. Her favorite words were: Mom, Grandma and GG. Spouses of her children and grandchildren were always treated as her own. She will also be remembered by her nieces and nephews for her thoughtfulness and kindness throughout the years.

Millie was a active member of Temple Sinai in Amityville, NY, serving in various roles including Temple Treasurer and Financial Secretary of the Sisterhood. She and John volunteered at BOCES (school for disadvantaged and disabled students) for many years among other volunteer activities. Upon moving to CT, she and John joined Temple Sinai in Newington, CT.

She was an executional hostess who made everyone feel special and welcome. She hosted wonderful gatherings and dinner parties for friends and family alike. Her immediate family always looked forward to holiday meals and will fondly remember the ever-present frozen bread, pot roast, homemade coleslaw, applesauce, and spinach casserole. Millie loved desserts and always left room for a treat at the end of a meal.

Millie was an avid Scrabble player and shared in solving crossword puzzles with John. She had a great sense of humor and loved her shopping outings with her daughter. She also proved that one can have a fantastic life without ever learning to drive a car. Millie followed the UConn Huskies woman’s basketball team for many years. She was one of a kind and will be remembered and deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to meet her and spend time with her.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday November 7, 2025 at 12 noon at Temple Sinai 41 West Hartford Rd. Newington, CT. 06111. Donations in Millie’s memory may be made to the Jewish National Fund or charity of your choice. Millie would want you to enjoy a piece of cake in her memory!
