Merna Robbin passed away on December 2nd, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Merna was born in 1933 to Max and Bessie Morgenstein of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Merna was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and studied education. After college, Merna moved to Hartford, Connecticut to be a teacher. In Hartford, she met her husband, Philip Robbin, and they were married in 1957. Merna’s family expanded, at that time, to include her step-mother, Rebecca Morgenstein, and her brother, Mark Morgenstein. Philip and Merna had a son, Bruce Robbin, in 1959, who was married to Jody Robbin, and a daughter, Carol, in 1962, who is married to Frank Laufer. Philip and Merna had four grandchildren, Tammy, Emily, Trevor and Lauren, and a grandson-in-law Michael. Merna enjoyed being a teacher in Bloomfield, Connecticut in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She earned a masters degree in education for children with learning disabilities after attending graduate school at St. Joseph’s and Central Connecticut state colleges. Merna taught children with and without learning disabilities at St. Vincent’s elementary school and the middle school in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Merna also taught at the Hebrew School of Beth Hillel Synagogue in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Merna strongly believed in equal rights, integration and the power of education as did her mother, Bessie, who was also a teacher. After her retirement, Merna enjoyed studying Indigenous Americans. She belonged to discussion groups and traveled with her husband, Philip, to learn about their history and culture. Merna also enjoyed caring for her grandchildren in Connecticut and New York. After moving to West Hartford, Philip and Merna were cared for by our close, family friend, Jane Owiredu, who provided loving care to both of them over approximately twenty years.
