May (Marcia Cohen) Homelson

May Marcia (Cohen) Homelson, 84, of Bloomfield, formerly of New Britain, died on Thursday, September 29, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital. She was known throughout Connecticut as a talented concert pianist and teacher, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and a woman with a kind and giving heart. Born on December 20, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia, May grew up in New Britain, Connecticut, and graduated from New Britain High School. She studied piano with Julius Hartt and Moshe Paranov at the Hartt School of Music, as well as Professor Lawson, who had a piano studio in New Britain. May was a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and did graduate studies at Columbia University. She had her own piano studio in New Britain, where she shared her gift of music with many students until she married and moved to Bloomfield. She then continued to teach students in Bloomfield. May was a soloist with the Boston Symphony, and performed throughout the New England States. May Homelson and her husband, the late Deputy Sheriff Isaac Homelson, were charter members of the Beth Hillel Synagogue in Bloomfield. May was very active with the Beth Hillel Sisterhood, and served in many capacities, including Vice President. She was also very active with the West Hartford Chapter of the American Medical (Cancer Research) Center of Denver, serving as Vice President. May Homelson always donated her talents as a pianist and artist for programs for both organizations, including being the pianist for their fashion shows. She brought up her children Rochelle and Joseph with music, and performed with them in concerts throughout New England. She shared her gift of music with her grandson Benjamin, who also gave performances with the family. To all who knew her, May Marcia Homelson was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend with a loving heart. She was never too busy to help anyone who asked. She was full of love for people, and they were full of love for her. May Marcia Homelson is survived by her son State Marshal Joseph A. Homelson of Bloomfield, her daughter Attorney Rochelle Homelson and her husband Phil Meister of West Hartford, and her grandson Benjamin Homelson-Meister, as well as nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives. She was predeceased by her husband Deputy Sheriff Isaac Homelson, and her sister Helen Rosenthal. Funeral services will be Sunday, October 2, 2005 at 11:00 AM, graveside, at the Beth Hillel Cemetery, Wolcott Road, East Granby. The memorial period will be observed at her home Sunday afternoon after the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
