Max 'Nosh' (E.) Mandell

MANDELL, MAX E. ?NOSH?, 95 years of age, of West Hartford died Friday, August 21, 2009. Born in Hartford, he was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Harriet Shafer Mandell. He was the son of the late Abraham and Raye Mandell. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Louis Lobs’ Mandell and Morris Jiggs’ Mandell and by his sister, Roslyn Maidman. He was a graduate of Weaver High School and although Nosh never went to college he had a “Master’s Degree” in fixing automobiles at Mandell Brothers Woodland Service Station in Hartford’s North-end. The Station’, owned and operated by The Mandell Brothers, Nosh, Jiggs and Lobs, was a legendary fixture on Woodland Street for 35 years. Nosh was one of the last remaining members of the 13 Club along with Victor Greenberg and Irving Dav’ Levine. He was an avid golfer with a single digit handicap and played many rounds of golf at Keney Park, Minnechaug and Villa Delray Golf Courses. While living in Delray Beach, Florida he was a starter at the Villa Delray Golf Course. For 45 years he spent many wonderful summers with Harriet and their family at the family cottage at Old Colony Beach, Old Lyme, Connecticut. While living at The Gables in Farmington, Nosh was the Bingo Maven. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who adored him. He leaves his son Attorney Joel Mandell and his wife Ellen of Simsbury, his daughters Laurie Mandell and her best friend Richard Weinstein of Avon and Evelyn Jones and her husband Newman of Grants Pass, OR; five grandchildren, Peter Mandell and his wife Julie, Ross Mandell and his wife Amy, Jason Mandell, Joshua Fine and his wife Brooke and Katie Fineberg and her husband Mark; and four great-granddaughters, Devon, Jenna and Rachel Mandell, and Hayley Fineberg and a great grandson, Logan Maxwell Mandell who was named after his great-grandfather, Max. He also leaves his sisters-in-law Marilyn Weiss and Felicia and her husband Jerome ?Yozi? Goldfield and many loving nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Hebrew Home and Hospital for the loving care Nosh received. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 11:00AM at Weinstein Mortuary 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT with Cantor Susan Levine officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Road, East Granby. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Joel and Ellen Mandell, 7 Harriet Lane, Simsbury following the funeral, Wednesday afternoon and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Memorial donations in Nosh?s name may be made to Hebrew Healthcare, One Abrahms Boulevard, West Hartford, CT 06117. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
