Marvis ((Sweig)) Bogatz

Marvis (Sweig) Bogatz, widow of the late Philip Bogatz and beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother died on May 14, 2018 in Avon, CT. She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Mollie Sweig, as well as the love of her life, her husband Philip, to whom she was married for 64 years.

Marvis was born in 1923 and grew up in Plainville, CT on the family farm on Ledge Road with her parents and 7 siblings. She worked after high school as a U.S. Army Ordinance Secretary during World War II while waiting for her beloved to return from the Pacific Front so that they could marry. Shortly after their 1946 marriage, Marvis and Phil moved to Phoenixville, PA, where they started their family and daughters Karen and Debra were born.

Upon moving back to CT in 1954 and making Newington their home, Marvis settled in as wife and mother, and enjoyed keeping the household running smoothly and cooking for her family; she was known for making hearty dinners and delicious home-cooked cakes and pies. Soon thereafter she re-entered the work force, where she worked in various administrative/secretarial positions until her 1985 retirement from Mutual of New York. She took short hand, and used this long lost skill, along with her put-together presence, to secure a position as an executive secretary. Shorthand was a skill she never forgot! Both at home and at work, Marvis used her planning and organizational skills and her quick mind to optimize her work and her household. Marvis was also active at Temple Sinai, Newington, CT where she has been a member since 1956. She also enjoyed exercise, reading, and UConn women’s basketball. Most importantly, Marvis enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a strong presence in her household and community, and always voiced her opinions.

While Marvis lived a long life, it was not without its challenges. Over the last years, Marvis was diagnosed with memory loss. In spite of this, Marvis maintained a positive attitude, kept a smile on her face, and always cherished visits from her family. Throughout her illness, she developed a sweet rapport with her caretakers at River Ridge, Avon, CT as well as the compassionate staff at Hartford Hospital Hospice Care. We thank you all for the quality of care you provided Marvis.

Marvis leaves her daughter Debra Bogatz of Farmington, her grandson Michael, his wife Sapora, and great grandson Caleb Philip Bogatz of West Hartford, daughter Karen Gaffey of Bristol, and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by two sisters, Claire Goodwin of Hallandale, Florida and Ruth Stoner of Biscayne Bay, Florida. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Arnold and Allen, and three of her sisters, Gertrude, Bernice, and Charlyn.

Funeral services will be held on May 17, 2018 at 11:00am at Temple Sinai, 41 West Hartford Road, Newington with internment at Temple Sinai Memorial Park. Burial will follow at the adjacent Temple Sinai Memorial Park. Family and friends will be received immediately afterward at Temple Sinai.
