Martin (S.) Stillman

Attorney Martin S Stillman, 63, of Newington, passed away on July 10, 2009 in the company of his loving family after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Suzanna Rich Stillman. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Marty was the son of Albert and Ruth (Moskowitz) Stillman. Marty received his undergraduate degree from NYU then moved to Massachusetts where he received his Juris Doctor Degree from Boston University. He moved to Rocky Hill where he lived for 32 years before moving to Newington in 2001. Attorney Stillman was a member of the Bar in the State of CT, US District Court of CT, United States Court of Appeals for the Second District and United States Supreme Court. He has served as Counsel to the House Majority and Counsel to the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the CT General Assembly and Legislative Counsel to the CT Bar Association. He was instrumental in creating the first state Emergency Medical Services regulations for EMS. Attorney Stillman started his own firm and practiced law for forty years. Marty was a certified instructor in Emergency Telecommunications and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), He was a founding member of Rocky Hill Volunteer Ambulance Association (RHVAA) where he served as President, served four terms as Chief of Service, served as Assistant Chief of Administration, was a Training Officer and served as Legal Counsel. Marty was committed to and dedicated his life to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for the past 40 years. He was a pioneer and educator in EMS and was an expert in EMS law. He was a consummate volunteer and his passion for helping others was always present. Marty?s love for EMS led him to become the first Director of The Office of Emergency Medical Services in 1974. He was Counsel to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and the Native American Emergency Medical Services Association (NAEMSA) for over 15 years. His counsel and direction were instrumental in NAEMT?s development as a voice for the EMS practitioner. The values and integrity Marty contributed to the growth of NAEMT and the inspiration he provided to the EMS community locally, nationally and worldwide will be evident for generations. Attorney Stillman also served as Magistrate for the State of Connecticut in several counties across the state and enjoyed his work on the bench. He was the recipient of several awards throughout the past years including the A.E. Hertzler Knox Award, the Dr. Richard L Judd Lifetime Achievement Award, the NAEMT Presidential Recognition Award, the NAEMT Presidential Leadership Award and the RHVAA Lifetime Achievement Award. Marty was an EMS instructor and served as the Vice President of the Connecticut Society of EMS Instructors for numerous years. He was a member of the Connecticut Critical Incident Stress Team and served as their Chairman of the Board. Marty also served on the Board of Trustees of the National EMS Museum. He was an EMS Instructor and conducted many training classes throughout Connecticut and the United States. Marty was also an EMS Consultant to several states and municipalities nationwide. Marty was known for his vast knowledge, quick wit and his sense of humor under any circumstance. Besides his wife, he is survived by six children whom he loved very much - Nancy and Will Poland of Ellington, Amy and David Hurley of Waltham, MA, Debra and Caleb Lopez of Windsor, Rebecca Stillman of Rocky Hill, Brian and Elizabeth Rich of Farmington and Trista and Steven Olsen of South Elgin, IL. Marty is also survived by seven grandchildren who were the joy of his life ? Laura, Jessica, Isaac, Gabriel, Nathan, Ian and Harrison. Marty was predeceased by his mother and father, his sister Barbara, his son Michael and his granddaughter Kali. Marty will be fondly remembered by his many close friends and colleagues. Calling hours will be Monday July 13th from 6-9 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue Hartford. The funeral service will be held Tuesday July 14th at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Weinstein Mortuary, followed by a graveside service at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill. Shiva will be observed at his home, 1806 Main St., Newington, from 4-9 PM Tuesday, July 14th through Thursday, July 16th. Prayer services will be held at his home Tuesday July 14th at 4 PM.
