Marjorie (Gaber) Simon

Marjorie (Gaber) Simon of Geraldine Dr., Coventry, beloved wife of Theodor (Ted) Simon, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011. Born in Winsted, Marge was a long time resident of West Hartford until she and Ted moved to an apartment which their son Eric Simon built for them adjacent to his home in Coventry five years ago. Marge graduated from Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital as a nurse and proceeded to the University of Connecticut, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Physiology. It was there in 1953 that she met Ted, an international graduate student from Sao Paulo, Brazil. They were married in Torrington in June of 1954. They left Connecticut to live in Brazil, but returned after a few years to a new life and a new home in Simsbury. Their daughter Anita was born in Brazil, but she was soon joined by two brothers, Eric, born in Winsted, and Thomas, born in Hartford. No one was happier to have Marge, Ted, and their three children here in Connecticut than Marge’s parents, Leah (Grossman) Gaber and Morris Gaber of Winsted who for many years were the center of our extended family life. Aside from practicing her nursing skills as a visiting nurse, as a school nurse, and as a part-time nursing supervisor in a convalescent home, Marge saw to it that her family also benefitted from her extensive knowledge and nursing experience. Even our friends trusted her considerable diagnostic skills and frequently asked for her advice. Marge was also a “master gardener” who loved making flower arrangements to adorn every room in our home. She loved good music, especially opera, and was an avid reader until adult macular degeneration robbed her of her eyesight in later years. The true joy of her life was her three children, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, scattered over many countries. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 10:30 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with interment following in the Star Benevolent Association Cemetery, Waterbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 2075 Silas Deane Hgwy., Suite 100, Rocky Hill 06067, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
