Malcolm (Shoor) Roth

MALCOLM SHOOR ROTH passed away on March 18, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Roth was born in Hartford, CT on January 28, 1933, the son of Frank E. Roth, M.D. and Alice Shoor Roth. A lifelong resident of West Hartford, he was a graduate of William H. Hall High School in 1951. He attended Dartmouth College (Class of 1955) where he was a member of the Phi Lambda Pi fraternity. Dr. Roth received his medical degree from the New York University College of Medicine (1959), interned at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, and served his residency at New York University-Bellevue. In 1963, Dr. Roth opened an ophthalmology practice in Hartford, where he practiced medicine for nearly fifty years. Board certified in 1965, he has a long association with Mt. Sinai Hospital and Hartford Hospital. He served as the Chief of Staff of Mt. Sinai. Dr. Roth was the founder of the first Medicare-certified free-standing eye surgery centers in New England, was assistant clinical professor at the University of Connecticut Medical School. He was a member of the New England Ophthalmology Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. An innovative surgeon, Dr. Roth was among the first ophthalmology surgeons in the northeast to introduce the method of phaco-emulsification for the removal of cataract, and among the first to introduce intra-ocular lenses to correct vision in the eye in which the lens has been removed. His great joy was the ability to improve sight to the thousands of his patents whose vision has been compromised. In addition to his many accomplishments in medicine, Dr. Roth also served as a board member of Fidelco, President of the Board of Congregation Beth Israel, a board member of the Palm Beach Civic Association. Dr. Roth also served in the U.S. Airforce Reserves where he held the rank of Captain. An avid golfer, Dr. Roth was a long time member of Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield and Bayon Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida where he was the Vice-President and Chair of the House Committee. Dr. Roth’s greatest joy was his family. He was predeceased by his sister, Jacqueline Kane, and by his stepdaughter, Tara Savin, with whom he held a special bond. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara, his children Robert Roth and Katie Thomason, Julianne Roth and Frank Day and Steven Roth and his wife Lori, his grandchildren Alexander Roth, Nicole Roth, Nolan Thompson, Samuel Steinberg, Charles Steinberg, Jacob Roth and Emily Roth. Dr. Roth will be missed by his stepchildren Candice Savin, and her husband Daniel Gross and Robert Savin and his wife Cristina, and by his step grandchildren Aliza Gross and Ethan Gross. His passing will leave a void in the hearts of his many friends whose lives were made better for having known him. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 20th at 3:00 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford with burial in Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. A memorial period will be observed at his home following the funeral. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the “Frank Roth Noah’s Ark Foundation” at Temple Beth Israel.
