Ludwig Weinberger

Ludwig Weinberger, 90, of West Hartford, husband of the late Julie (Mieses) Weinberger, passed away Tuesday (August 30, 2005) at the Hebrew Home and Hospital in West Hartford. He was born in Vienna, Austria, on February 11, 1915, to the late Wilhelm and Alice (Furth) Weinberger. He was predeceased by a sister, Nora Weinberger Goldberger. Ludwig was a graduate of the Handelsakademie in Vienna, where he earned a business degree. He was employed until 1938 in the family firm, manufacturers and retailers of carpet and linoleum. When Hitler seized power in Austria in 1938, the Weinberger family fled Vienna, leaving behind not only property and business holdings, but their way of life in a city they loved. Several family members perished in the concentration camps, while others became refugees, making new lives in new countries. Ludwig and Julie found safe passage to Montevideo, Uruguay, where they lived until 1952. Always an avid reader, Ludwig established a new career in Uruguay as a bookstore owner, and later, when he emigrated to the United States, he made a living as a publishing executive with several firms in metropolitan New York, including Pergamon Press. Since 2002, Ludwig was a resident of West Hartford, at the Summerwood assisted living facility, and for the past several weeks as a patient at the Hebrew Home. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, G. J. and Jill Weinberger of Farmington, a grandson, Jordan Weinberger of New Jersey; two nephews, Stanley Mieses of New York City and Michael Goldberger of Tel Aviv, Israel; and a niece, Monika Dattler, of Boro Park, NY. Funeral services will be held TODAY, Thursday, September 1st, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Interment will take place on Friday at 11:00 AM at the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Fairlawn, NJ. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
