Louis Jainchill

Louis Jainchill, 92, beloved husband of the late tte “Nunny” (Jaffa) Jainchill passed away peacefully July 29, 2011 at Brittany Farms Health Center in New Britain. Born in Hartford, the son of the late David and Jenny (Krinsky) Jainchill, he attended local Hartford area schools, including the Hartford Trade School, and worked for Colt Firearms before entering the Army during World War II on June 20, 1943. Louis was deployed to Europe the following May where he served with the 168th Division of the Army Combat Engineers building bridges and searching for and disarming German land mines. Because of his familiarity with guns from his days working at Colt, he became a machine gunner, who saved the life of his ammunitions specialist, until his capture by the German army during the Battle of the Bulge on December 21, 1944 near the town of St. Vit on the Belgium border of France. After nearly 5 months as a prisoner of war, his camp was liberated on April 17, 1945 by the 89th Infantry of the 354th Infantry Division who arrived at the camp by crossing one of the bridges built by Louis’ division. He was proud to have served his country and remained devoted to the United States and everything American throughout his life, even making the trip in his late 80’s to Europe to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day in June, 2004. On April 10, 1949 he married “Nunny”, the love of his life, in Providence, RI and worked there as a jewelry salesman until moving to Bloomfield to become the warehouse foreman at City Supply and Paper Company, Hartford until his retirement at age 62. After retirement, he took a part-time job with the Bloomfield School System as a bus driver for physically and mentally challenged students taking an interest in their welfare and working with both parents and teachers to make the students’ lives better wherever he could. Louis spent a number of years living in Florida before returning to the West Hartford area where he lived at both Hamilton Heights and Chatfield Assisted and Independent Living Facilities. In addition to his wife of 46 years and his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Florence Tondow and Ruth Jainchill and his brothers Harold and Sidney Jainchill. He will be sadly missed by his beloved daughter, Linda Friedman and her husband, Gerald “Jerry” of West Hartford, and his cherished granddaughters and their husbands, Sara and Jeffrey Mayo of Rozlyn, NY, and Rachel and Domenic Pizzo of Salem, MA who will always remember him as their hero. The family would like to thank the medical team from the Veterans Administration facility in Newington, the hospice team from Masonic Partners Home Health and Hospice and the entire staff of Station 1C at Brittany Farms Health Center for their caring and compassion. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 1, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with burial in the John Hay Memorial Park, Tower Ave., Hartford. A memorial period will be observed at the home of Louis’ daughter and son-in-law, 32 Hamlin Drive, West Hartford through Tuesday evening.
