Linda Bayer

Linda Bayer, daughter of Lillian Marlow and Philip Bayer (deceased), died at her home in Washington, D.C. on May 14, 2009. She grew up in Manchester, Connecticut. In addition to her mother, she leaves behind a daughter and son-in-law, Rabbi Ilana Grinblatt and Tal Grinblatt, a son, Philip Lev Berenbaum, two grandchildren, Jeremy and Hannah Grinblatt, and a brother and sister-in-law, Aaron Bayer and Laurie Bayer. A woman of many talents, she was a gifted artist, musician, writer, and teacher. She prized education and pursued it throughout her life, receiving a Masters in English from Clark University, a Ph.D. in English and art history from Florida State University, and a Masters in education from Harvard University.She taught for many years in very different venues, from an inner city high school in Florida to Wesleyan University to the U.S. Naval Academy always especially attentive to those students with extraordinary ability that others could not see or reach. She published numerous works of non-fiction, as well as a novel entitled ?The Blessing and the Curse,? and she edited the writing of other authors. Before she died, she was proudly editing a book written by her daughter, Ilana. Her career included serving as a senior writer in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy during the Clinton Administration. She also founded and ran, for many years with her son Lev, the Washington Internship Program, which placed thousands of college students in internships in Washington, D.C. and taught them about the nation?s Capitol. She loved all things that were beautiful, especially the beach, flowers, and art. While often engaged in solitary intellectual and professional pursuits, she loved her family deeply, and she will be deeply missed. Donations in Linda?s memory may be made to Temple Beth Sholom, 400 East Middle Turnpike, Manchester, CT 06040, where funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 17th, at 8:45 a.m. Shiva will be observed at Lillian Marlow?s home, 51 Blue Ridge Drive in Manchester, from Sunday through Thursday, May 17-21, at 7:30 p.m. each day, except Tuesday, May 19, which will be at 6:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
