Lillian (Blumenthal) Alexander

Lillian (Blumenthal) Alexander, 86, of Newington, CT died Friday (November 25, 2011). She was born August 7, 1925 in Berlin, Germany. As a Holocaust survivor, Lillian stressed the importance of civil liberties, that the right to vote should always be cherished. She strongly believed in the significance of the arts and education, instilling this passion in her children and grandchildren. She came to New York with her family in January of 1941, where she studied art and design during high school. After marrying Saul, they moved to Hartford, CT to raise their family, where she took leadership roles in the PTA, girl scouts, and cub scouts. Her artistic abilities were showcased throughout her work with these organizations. Lillian was also an avid reader, enjoying mainly European history and books of humor, especially the witticisms of Mark Twain. It was well known to all that Lillian was also an accomplished chef and seamstress. A highlight of her life was the twenty years she spent as a History Professor at Central Connecticut State University. She is survived by her three children, Jerry Alexander and his wife Jane of Cambridge, MA, Judy Parnasa and her husband David of Jerusalem, Israel and Joanne Shulman and her husband Larry of Newington, CT; eight grandchildren Emma and Karl Alexander, Efrat, Eli and his wife Idit, Avi, and Orit Parnasa, and Dana and Joshua Shulman. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 29 at noon at Temple Sinai Cemetary, 41 West Hartford Road, Newington. Friends and family may visit at the Shulman household at 155 Brentwood Road, Newington on Tuesday, November 29 and Wednesday, November 30 from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Mark Twain House & Museum c/o The Development Department, 351 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105.
