It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Libby Wallace, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who passed away peacefully on August 14th, 2026. She is survived by her husband Ben, son Aaron and his wife Anya, daughter Ellie and her husband Jeff, and grandchildren Ada, Lena, Lucas and Jackson.
Libby was born February 19, 1952, in New York, to Edward and Elizabeth Cohen. Growing up on Long Island, she graduated from Herricks High School in 1969, and attended SUNY Binghamton, where she participated in Vietnam War protests and developed a love for reading and writing. Libby graduated in 1973 with a degree in creative writing. She then worked as a radio journalist for 5 years, during which time she interviewed numerous important figures, including an extended interview with Roselyn Carter. Libby married Ben Wallace in 1980, and together they moved to Yonkers, NY, where she attended Columbia University, receiving her first of several graduate degrees in 1982, with a Master's in Public Administration and a minor in accounting. Soon thereafter, they moved to Connecticut, where she became a CPA and was recognized by the state for scoring highest on the CPA exam for that year. She then worked as a CPA for 15 years. Once her children were older, Libby obtained a Master's in Education from Central Connecticut State University and worked in the West Hartford Public Schools for many years, teaching both Language Arts and Math. Once retired, she continued to support the community, volunteering her time at the Hillcrest Center after-school homework program (HANOC), and more recently, at the Kosher Food Pantry, both in West Hartford. Despite a battle with cancer, she remained dedicated to her volunteer work and devoted to her family.
Libby enjoyed singing, playing piano, swimming, writing and reading. She will be remembered by her commitment to education, love for children, and continued work in community service.
A funeral service will be held at Temple Beth Israel at 701 Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, on Wednesday, August 19th at 11am, followed by a graveside burial in Vernon, and a luncheon at the Synagogue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kosher Food Pantry in West Hartford. (Checks may be made payable to Jewish Family Services or JFS and write “Food Pantry” on the memo line. Mail to: Jewish Family Services, 333 Bloomfield Ave, Suite A. West Hartford, CT 06117).
