Lawrence Keith Schwartz (Larry) passed away on February 28th under hospice care at home. He was born in Hartford May 15, 1934 to Philip Schwartz and Hilda Laschever Schwartz. He graduated from Weaver High School in 1952 & Yale University – School of Engineering in 1956. He married Merle Weitzman in December 1956 and lived in New Haven while working at New Haven Trap Rock Co. as an assistant engineer. After deciding to work with structural steel, he worked for City Iron Works in Wethersfield as a structural designer, then became a partner in Shepard Steel Company while raising his family and living in West Hartford for the past 67 years. When he retired at 70, he and Merle spent winters in Palm Desert, CA. He was an outstanding athlete, playing 3 high school sports. He enjoyed golf, tennis, and racquetball well into his 80s - belonging to Tumblebrook Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA, Hartford Tennis Club, and New Britain YMCA. He was formerly a member and on the board of Temple Sinai in Newington and was a member of Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Merle, and three sons: Andrew (Izabela), Peter (Robin), and Jonathan (Julie) – grandchildren Philip (Jordan), Michaela (Justin), Annabelle, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. He was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Alan and Edward. Burial will be on Wednesday, March 4th at 11:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Services will at 12:30 p.m. at the Chapel at Beth Israel – 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, to be followed by a reception from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in Feldman Hall - Beth Israel. Special thanks to the compassionate nurses and caregivers who tended to Larry in his last few weeks of life.
