Holocaust survivor Joseph Schor, 90 years of age, of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of West Hartford, CT, passed away on Saturday February 3, 2018. Born in Zalosci Poland, he was interned in the Zborow Ghetto and was the sole survivor of his family - Father Nathan Dubowy, Mother Pesha Dubowy (nee Apter), Sister Shaindel, Brothers Eli, Mendel, Jacob, Moishe. After liberation by the Soviet Army, he met his much beloved wife, the late Genia (Tannenbaum) Schor of Zelechow Poland, who was also a sole survivor of her family - Father Moishe, Mother Rachael, and twins Samuel and Toube. Together, Joseph and Genia who survived the ravages that the Nazis perpetrated, represented the rare remnant of what remained of the once vibrant community of 3 million pre-war Polish Jews. With the assistance of his uncle Benjamin Apter, who left Poland in 1925 and his wife Fanny, Joseph immigrated to the US in 1955. Soon thereafter with two other Holocaust survivors - Benjamin Grossman and Kurt Israel, he started Hartford Kosher Caterers/Imperial Caterers. Taking advantage of the opportunities America offered, the business prospered, even serving President Gerald Ford. Joseph is survived by his son Nathan Schor (San Francisco CA) who was born in Poland, his son Mark Schor (Wellington, FL) who was born in a Displaced Persons camp in Austria, and his daughter Roberta (Schor) Walpert and her husband Ken Walpert (Upper Saddle River, NJ) and much beloved grandsons: Dr. Adam Walpert and his wife, Dr. Kady Goldlist; Jacob Walpert and Benjamin Schor. Joseph was also a loving “uncle” to the grandchildren of Ben and Fanny Apter - Steven Apter, Clifford Apter, George Apter, Paula (Apter) Ruderman, Michael Apter and Cindy (Apter) Tabachnik.
Funeral services will take place at 11AM on Tuesday February 6 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi Phillip Lazowski officiating. Interment will follow in the Aaron Association Cemetery, 999 Garden Street, Hartford, CT. Immediately following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford, CT. Shiva will be observed at the home of Roberta and Ken Walpert, 96 Oak Drive, Upper Saddle River, NJ 07458 on Wednesday February 7th and Thursday February 8th from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT.
