Joseph Hurwitz

Joseph Hurwitz, 85, of West Hartford, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. Mr. Hurwitz was born in Hartford on July 29, 1929, a son of Doctor Max Herman and Sophie Lukashok Hurwitz. He was a graduate of Trinity College and Harvard Law School. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and in the Army Reserve. He practiced law as a founding partner of Sorokin, Sorokin, Hurwitz, Rabinovitz and Gassner. He was a past President of the Hartford Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford, and a Board member of the Hartford Jewish Federation, the Emanuel Synagogue, and other local and national Jewish organizations. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Judith Hurwitz, and his brother Edward Hurwitz. He is survived by his second wife, Bonnie Mitchell, of Modesto, California; his sister, Sylvia, of West Hartford; his son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan Hurwitz and Mona Schnitzler, of Brooklyn, New York; his son and daughter-in-law, Seth Hurwitz and Eleanor DesPrez, of St. Louis, Missouri; and his grandchildren Ben, Daniel, Sophie, and Eliza. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of the Weinstein’s Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield. The family will sit shiva at the home of Jonathan Hurwitz and Mona Schnitzler, 203 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, New York.
