Joseph A. Gitlin, 100, of West Hartford, devoted and beloved husband of the late Henrietta M. (Elkins) Gitlin, passed away at home peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2016. Born on March 22, 1916 in New Britain to David and Rose (Botnick) Gitlin, Joe graduated from Hartford High School and Boston University. During WWII, he served as an officer with the 325th Service Squadron of the US Air Force in England and France. The public accounting firm that Joe co-founded is still thriving, over 60 years later. A consummate professional, he dedicated himself to his colleagues and his clients. He worked tirelessly on their behalf well into his 80’s. Joe met his soul mate and true love, Henrietta, to whom he was married for over 70 years. He enjoyed traveling, swimming, stamp collecting and gardening. Together they raised two daughters and, for several years, were active members of the West Hartford Senior Center, especially enjoying “Lively Minds” and dancing. Joe is survived by his children Ronna Woodward (Dana) and Karen Gitlin-Weiner (Dr. Richard) as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Henrietta, his brothers Max and Nathan and his sister, Ida. Joe’s family is very grateful for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Ronald Szabo, Dr. Richard Stone, and Hartford HealthCare at Home, especially his wonderful caregivers, Gillean, Claudia and Stephanie. A memorial service will be held on December 19, 2016, at 11:00AM in the chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford.
