Joel (R.) Lefkowitz

Joel R. Lefkowitz, 88 years of age, formally of Bloomfield, and beloved husband of the late Carol N. Lefkowitz, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at his home, The Hoffman Summerwood Community in West Hartford, CT. Born in Hartford, CT. He was the son of the late Samuel and Gertrude (Hoffman) Lefkowitz. Joel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Connecticut’s School of Pharmacy.
He worked for many Hartford area pharmacies until he purchased his own store, Main Street Drug of Wethersfield, CT, with his partner David Haynes. Later on, he worked as a pharmacist for Arthur Drug in Windsor, CT where his customers relied on his sage advice and sound judgement. He was a member of the Connecticut Pharmacists Association, Jewish Masonic Lodge and the The Gustav Mahler Society of New York. Joel was a passionate amateur photographer whose photos of Old Wethersfield can be found in historical publications of the town.
He leaves his daughter, Rae E. Goldstein and her husband Laurence Goldstein, M.D., of Farmington; his son Ira R. Lefkowitz of Glastonbury; his brother, Herman Lefkowitz and his wife Nancy, of Bloomfield; and his beloved grandchildren, Jonathan M. Goldstein, M.D., and Sara A. Goldstein.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at 10:30 A.M., at the Beth Hillel Cemetery, 96 Wolcott Rd., East Granby, CT, 06026, with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. A memorial period will be observed at the home of his daughter Rae, in Farmington following interment through 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 15th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hebrew HealthCare, Att. Development, 1 Abrahms Blvd., West Hartford, CT 06117 or the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111.
