Jean R. Mazo

Jean Mazo passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 87, at her home in West Hartford, CT. She was a bright figure to all who knew her and will be remembered for her love for her family, her impeccable style, her incredible talent as an artist, her passion for teaching, as well as her love of travel, golf, bridge, and general zest for life.

Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother, a loving sister and aunt, a talented artist, an exceptional hostess, a fierce bridge player, an inspiring teacher, and a dear friend to many.

Jean was born on January 22, 1939, in Hartford, CT. She grew up in East Hartford, began painting at the age of 9, and later graduated from Russell Sage College. It was during this time that she met her future husband, the other Gene. Throughout her life, she pursued her passion for painting, printmaking, and teaching art to students of all ages, but she especially enjoyed her 55-year career teaching seniors through the town of Bloomfield’s Senior Center.

Jean had the privilege of participating in two rounds of the charity initiative CowParade, first in the New York City edition in 2000 and then the West Hartford edition in 2003. The West Hartford cow, entitled Peace Prints, resides at Aiken School.

For many years, Jean was a member of Connecticut Women Artists, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Connecticut Watercolor Society, and New Haven Paint and Clay. She has received numerous awards, from, among others, the New Group at the Yale Berkley Center, the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Springfield Art League. Her work appears in the collections of Aetna Life and Casualty, Marriott Hotels, United Technologies, the University of Connecticut Health Center, and other companies.

Jean has exhibited at the Berkshire Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Joseloff Gallery at the University of Hartford, the Slater Museum, the Yale Berkley Center, the Mandell Jewish Community Center and other museums.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Wendy Mazo; her daughter-in-law, Kelly Finn Mazo (partner Brian Drummey); grandchildren, Caroline Mazo and Samuel Mazo. She is predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Louisa Reisler; her husband of nearly 65 years, Eugene “Gene” Douglas Mazo; her beloved son, David Stephen Mazo; and her sister, Esther Goldstein, and her husband, Bernard.

Funeral services will be held at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT, at 1 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026. Interment will be held privately. Shiva to follow immediately after the burial. Details will be provided at the service.
