Janet Fierberg

Janet Fierberg, of West Hartford, passed away on May 9, 2015 at the age of 88.
She was the beloved wife of 64 years of the late I. Martin Fierberg and is survived by her son Michael A. Fierberg (Elyse Gellerman) and daughter Ellen Morgenstein (Morris), and three cherished grandchildren, Daryn Sundheim, Carrie Morgenstein and Jeffrey Fierberg. She also leaves five adored great grandchildren. Janet was born in New Haven, CT in 1926. She was the daughter of Lewis H. Merliss and Dorothy (Friedman) Merliss. She attended Hamden High School and the University of CT, graduating with a degree in Social Work.
Janet was an avid and competitive golfer who continued to play past her eightieth year. She was a past club champion at Cliffside Country Club, Tumble Brook Country Club and Boca Grove Golf & Tennis Club. She competed in CT State amateur tournaments for many years.
Janet was active in Jewish community service for the Hartford Jewish Federation and was a life member of the Hebrew Home & Hospital Auxiliary and Hadassah. Janet also was a volunteer at the UCONN Health center in Farmington for many years.
Along with her husband, Martin, Janet endowed the Janet M. Fierberg Scholarship Fund in Sociology at the School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut. Through this fund, each year four students who are pursuing Social Work as a major are given a fellowship award. Janet was very proud that she could help students in this way at her beloved alma mater.
Funeral services and interment will be private. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Janet’s daughter, Ellen Morgenstein in Avon, CT on Monday, May 11 from 3PM to 7PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Janet may be made to Jewish Family Services, 333 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117 or to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to express gratitude to the aides and nurses at St. Mary Home as well as the aides from Jewish Family Services Care at Home who took such warm and loving care of Janet.
