Israel Schreiber

Israel (Saul) Schreiber, 84 years of age, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2011 after a long illness. He was born in Borislav, Poland on January 1, 1927 to Dvora and Bernhard Schreiber. He was the sixth of fourteen children who included two adoptees. All members of his family, except for his older brother Yosef and himself, were killed during the Holocaust. Saul was imprisoned in several concentration camps, including Wieliczka in Poland, and Matthausen and Gusen II in Austria, where he was put into forced labor in a nearby Messerschmitt factory. By the end of World War II, Saul, who weighed less than 90 pounds, had survived the Holocaust’s brutality. When he discovered that he had no family to come home to and only one other family member left alive, he found his way to a displaced persons camp in Germany, where he met and married Miriam and started a new family. In 1949, he joined the Israeli army as a member of the Givati Brigade. He later moved with his family from Israel to Germany and Sweden, and back to Germany before finally settling in the United States. He was employed as a supervisor for D. A. Rosow’s in Newington, and also worked for County Distributors in East Windsor. He is survived by his loving wife Miriam, to whom he was married for 63 years, his devoted sons and daughters-in-law Bernie and Jane Schreiber of Mansfield, CT, Bob and Stacey Schreiber of West Hartford, CT, four grandchildren, Jonathan Schreiber and his wife Elena of Mansfield, CT, David Schreiber and his wife Katy of Newington, CT, Samantha Burgan of Derby, CT, Marisa Schreiber of West Hartford, CT, and a great-granddaughter, Julia. The family wishes to acknowledge the supportive care received from The Cancer Center at Saint Francis Hospital, Masonicare Partners Home Health and Hospice, Jewish Family Services, and The Hebrew Home & Hospital. A special gratitude goes to Ioney Campbell, a true angel on earth. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, with Rabbi Edward Cohen officiating. Interment will follow in the United Synagogues of Greater Hartford Memorial Park, 1361 Berlin Tpke., Wethersfield. Shiva will be observed on Tuesday following the interment as well as Tuesday evening at 32 West Maxwell Drive, West Hartford. On Sunday beginning at 6:00 PM, the family will receive relatives and friends at 2 Uncas Court, Mansfield, CT.
