Irwin (Alexander) Lustig

Irwin “Irv” Alexander Lustig, 92 years of age, of West Hartford died August 12, 2015. He was the husband of the late Annabelle (Cohen) Lustig. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Henry and Theresa (Newman) Lustig. Irv entered military service in 1943 and served in the 83rd Division, 329th regular Infantry Unit. He fought his way from Normandy to Berlin, served in the Battle of the Bulge and received five battle stars, including the silver star, bronze star and two purple hearts. He was instrumental in developing the first special license plate in the state of Connecticut, the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was an electrical contractor until he retired. He was a member of Beth Hillel Synagogue of Bloomfield and the Jewish War Veterans. While living in New Britain, he was elected president of the New Britain veterans counsel; he was a Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day parade and the Memorial Day parade. In West Hartford, he was president of the Greater Hartford Veterans Association and Grand Marshall of the Hartford Veterans Day parade and Hartford Memorial Day parade. For more than 20 years, he served as the financial officer of the Veterans Day and Memorial Day parades of Hartford. Irv was devoted to his family and friends and will always be remembered for his strength, bravery, intelligence and friendship. He leaves his children, Stephen Lustig and his wife Anna-Maria, of Victoria, British Columbia; Richard Lustig and his wife Ellen, of Richmond, VA; and Marc Lustig and his wife Flor, of West Hartford; his brother, Norman Lustig and his wife Hedy, of Nashville, TN; and his grandchildren, Caryn, Dara, Stacey, Ethan, Ashby and Aimee.

A private graveside service will be held with Rabbi Gary Atkins officiating. The family would like to invite Irv’s friends and family to join them at Brookdale Chatfield, 1 Chatfield Drive, West Hartford, CT at 3 pm on Friday, August 14 for a celebration of Irv’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beth Hillel Synagogue or a charity of your choice . Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
