Ida Smith Schaechter, much beloved wife of Harry B. Schaechter, passed away on November 1, 2011 in her home in West Hartford. She was 78 years old. In addition to her husband, Ida was the beloved mother of Judith Schaechter and her husband Michael Brownstein of Arlington, MA, and Lauren Lieberman and her husband Andy of Simsbury; loving grandmother of Deanna and Sam Lieberman, and Alana Brownstein. Ida also leaves her sister Lillian Cohen of Athol, MA. She was predeceased by her brothers Robert Smith and Sidney Smith. Ida was born in Milford, MA, on November 15, 1932, daughter of the late Solomon and Bessie (Vilinsky) Smith. She graduated Class Salutatorian from Milford High School in 1950. She attended Boston University for two years, and graduated with honors from Clark University. Following that, Ida went on to earn a Master Degree and Sixth Year Certificate from the University of Hartford. Ida retired after 36 years from teaching in the Hartford Public School System. For the last 15 years, she served as an Adjunct Math Faculty Member at the University of Hartford. In addition, Ida was Past President of the National Council of Jewish Women. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Ave., West Hartford. Following the interment, relatives and friends are invited to call at the home of Andy and Lauren Lieberman, 22 Lincoln Lane, Simsbury, and on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 7-9 P.M. She was well-loved and will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and academic colleagues.
