Herbert G. Isaacson, 89, of West Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 25, 2026. Born in Hartford on August 10, 1936, he was the only & favorite child of Joseph and Beatrix (Gordon) Isaacson. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lois C. (Yasler) Isaacson, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and travel.
“Strive for the best, and the best will come.” Raised in Winsted, CT, where his family owned the local department store, he graduated from The Gilbert School. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1958, earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1963, and studied as a Reynolds Scholar at the London School of Economics. He also proudly served his country in the US Army Reserves. Herbert was a lifelong scholar and dedicated professional.
An accomplished attorney, Herbert practiced law until the age of 80, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike through his integrity, intellect, and dedication. Beyond his legal career, he devoted much of his life to community service and civic engagement. He was past president of the CT Horticultural Society and served for more than 50 years on the board of the Foundation at Connecticut State Community College Northwestern. He was Chairman of the Winsted Memorial Hospital and a life-long member of Beth El Temple.
Herbert had a deep appreciation for the arts and culture. He was a longtime season ticket holder and supporter of Hartford Stage, Goodspeed Opera House, and TheaterWorks among others. He and Lois shared a passion for travel, journeying throughout the world together in search of new experiences and adventures.
He is survived by his loving children: Benjamin Isaacson and his wife Laurie of Avon, Brett Isaacson and his wife Heidi of Bloomfield, and Amy Isaacson Schoen and her husband Robert of West Hartford. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to William & Hannah and step-grandfather to Ryan, Stephanie, Tyler, and Forrest and to his step-great granddaughter Flora.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Weinstein Mortuary, with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow at Beth El Cemetery on Jackson Street Ext., Avon, CT. Following interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford. Shiva will continue Sunday at Amy’s home with relatives and friends gathering from 5:00 – 8:00 with evening service at 7:00.
