Helene (R.) Alisberg

Helene R. Alisberg, 82, of Avon died on Monday, December 11, 2006 at her home after a long illness. Helene came to Connecticut in 1967 and resided in West Hartford with her family until she moved to Avon in 1999. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1924, she received her B.S. from Adelphi College in 1944 and her MSW from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work in 1982. A recipient of several statewide and local awards for her work on behalf of early child hood education, Helene served on the Board of the Connecticut Association for the Education of Young Children (CAEYC), was a member of Ct Provider?s Caucus for Child Care, and a representative on the Early Childhood Alliance. From 1986 to 1996, she served as the Chair, Vice Chair, and Legislative Chair of the State of Connecticut Child Day Care Council. She was the Associate Director of the United Way of Connecticut from 1978 ? 1987, and was the Operations Manager for the CT. Institute for Health Manpower Resources from 1972-1978. Helene was an honorary docent at the Wadsworth Atheneum and a Honorary Life Director of Jewish Family Services. Helene was also particularly devoted to her family, including her extended family of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews. Her extended family also includes recent émigrés from the former Soviet Union whom she helped settle in this country. She was predeceased in 1997 by her husband, Dr. Norman Alisberg. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy, of West Hartford, her son, Andrew of Greenwich, and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be today at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave. Hartford, with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Burial will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Avon. A memorial period will be observed at her home today and Thursday from noon until 8 PM, and on Friday at the home of her son, Andrew Alisberg, 12 Dewart Rd. Greenwich from 10:30 until 4:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund at the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford designated to Jewish Family Services, 333 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford, 06117 or to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 85 Gillett Street, Hartford 06105.
