MASS, Helen (Shlaifer) Mass, of Osage Rd., West Hartford, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center. Born in New York, NY, on December 25, 1920, she was the daughter of the late David and Sima (Wolinsky) Shlaifer. Helen graduated from Hunter College and received her Masters in Education from the University of Hartford. She taught students from the third grade through high school in the Bloomfield school system and through graduate school, as an Assistant Professor of Education at the University of Hartford, from which she also received a service award in 1976. She was a member of ORT, a lifetime member of Hadassah, and a past president of the Beth David Synagogue Women?s Auxiliary, as well as the Alpha Omega Dental Auxiliary. Helen is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dr. Calvin Mass; and by her children, Dr. Martin Mass and his wife Jill of South Glastonbury, and Nan Kristt of Avon; by her grandchildren, Noah Mass and his wife Nicole of Minneapolis, MN, Gabriel Mass and his wife Rachael of Indianapolis, IN, Dara Kristt of Brooklyn, NY, and Eric Kristt of Purchase, NY; and her her much loved nieces and nephews, their families and many old and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brother Dr. Arthur Shlaifer. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Yitzchok Adler officiating. Interment will follow in Beth David Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. Shiva will be observed on Sunday following the funeral through Tuesday evening at her home, 11 Osage Rd., West Hartford.
