Helen Horovitz

Helen Horovitz, 97, passed away peacefully at the Hebrew Home in West Hartford on October 17, 2014. She was the daughter of Sam and Matilda Clafter of Brooklyn, NY. Helen was pre-deceased by her husband Mayor Aaron Horovitz of Cornwall, Ontario. Helen was born on February 3, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY. She attended nursing school at the Brooklyn Jewish General Hospital where she met her future husband, Aaron. Upon marriage in NY she moved to Cornwall, Ontario to start a family and support her husband’s political career. During her husband’s 18 year term as Mayor of Cornwall, she served as First Lady and was formally presented to two Queens of England as well as other dignitaries from Canada and the U.S. While a resident of Canada, Helen was actively involved in the Jewish communities in Montreal and Cornwall. She was a world traveler, an avid reader, and cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also an active member of the Hebrew Home community. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Wetstone of Farmington, CT and her son Dr. Joel Horovitz of NYC. Helen also leaves behind six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to the entire staff of the Hebrew Home and Hospital for their care and support. A memorial service to celebrate her life will take place at 2:30PM on Wednesday, October 22 at the Hebrew Home in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hebrew Home and Hospital.
