Harry Smith

Harry Smith of West Hartford passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday (October 19, 2010). He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Bransky) of 62 years and his children Ellen Litinger (and Neal) of Paramus, NJ, Robert Smith (and Beverly) of South Windsor, Steven Smith (and Carey) of Enfield. He is also survived by his brother, Nate Smith and sister-in-law Harriet of Boynton Beach, FL, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Marvin and Terri Bransky of Hypoluxo, FL. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Sherri (and Michael) Brickman, Adam Litinger, David Smith, Dayna Smith, Jocelyn Smith, Chelsea Smith and his great-grandson Jacob Brickman, as well as many loving nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, Tillie and Abraham Smith, and his sister, Ida (and Maurice) Ginsberg and his brother, Philip Smith. Dedicated to his community, Harry was a long-standing active member of Beth Hillel Synagogue in Bloomfield. As a Jewish war veteran, he served his country during World War II following his graduation from Weaver High School in Hartford. While at Weaver, he starred on championship basketball and baseball teams which led to his election to the Jewish Athletes Hall of Fame. His love and affection for his family, which extended through marriage and multiple generations, was the essence of his life. Family gatherings on weekends and holidays, sharing recreation and travel, and being with his family and sharing in their collective joy was his greatest pleasure. Funeral services will be held on Thursday (October 21, 2010) at 10:30 a.m. at Weinstein Mortuary, Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Evening services will be held at the Smith Home in West Hartford, Thursday through Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beth Hillel Synagogue, Bloomfield, or a charity of individual choice.
