Harold B. Shapiro, 90, of Avon, CT formerly of West Hartford passed away at home on Monday January 15, 2018. Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Israel and Ethyl (Mekler) Shapiro. After he matriculated at the Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts he volunteered for the armed forces and served for two years during the American occupation of Japan. He went on to attend NYU earning a BS and chose accounting as his career path. He was a founding partner of the CPA firm Siskin, Shapiro & Company in Hartford. After twenty years of sustained growth the firm merged with the international accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand. He was a senior partner in the firm which merged again to become PricewaterhouseCoopers. Harold was active in the greater Hartford community and served as chairman of the board of the Hebrew Home & Hospital. He was also involved in other charitable organizations. Harold was active in sports throughout his life and especially enjoyed playing golf and tennis. He had an appreciation for the arts and looked forward to exploring various museums. Harold is survived by his son Ken Shapiro of Norwich, CT and his daughter Nancy Shapiro of Avon, CT. In addition to his parents, Harold was predeceased by his sister Toby Hano. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday January 21, 2018 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Internment will follow in the Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery, 51 Jackson Street, Avon, CT. The family will receive relatives and friends at 9 Redwood Lane, Avon, CT following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org/donate/donations.
