Gerda (Kaddon) Lion

Gerda Kadden Lion, of West Hartford, died Monday afternoon, July 13, 2015. She was born in Halsdorf, Germany on July 22, 1913. The daughter of Malchen and Salomon Kadden, she leaves her beloved daughter, Helene Springer, son-in-law, Felix Springer, granddaughters, Shira Springer and Dena Springer and husband David Novick, and three great grandsons, Henry, Jack and Benjamin Novick and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Leo W. Lion as well as her parents , her brothers and sister, Max, Siegmund, Al and Golde. Her escape from Nazi Germany is chronicled in several publications, including “Saving the Kattens,” a cover story in the Boston Globe magazine. Her diminutive stature-4’10’-belied her steely will, boldness and courage in the face of growing Nazi oppression in Germany. She was most happy using her expert skills as a seamstress, cook and gardener for family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT followed by interment at B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom Cemetery, Windsor, CT. Shiva will be observed for seven days at the home of Felix and Helene Springer, 60 Stoner Dr., West Hartford, CT Many thanks to the caring staff at the Hebrew Home and Hospital.
