Frances “Faigy” (Goldman) Hershkowitz, 92, of West Hartford, CT passed away peacefully on May 6th surrounded by her family. Faigy was born on June 13, 1922 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, daughter of Yetta and Asher Goldman. She was predeceased by her 2 brothers, Harry and Sydney Goldman and by her husband of 59 years, Aaron Hershkowitz. She was raised and attended public school in lower Manhattan. During and after World War II she worked as a social worker for the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society meeting Jewish Refugees as they arrived in New York and helped them to settle into their new life in America. After marrying Aaron they moved to Lawrence, Kansas where he was completing his PhD in Social Psychology. It was in Kansas where their daughter Lisa was born in 1954. In successive years, they moved to Buffalo, NY, and New Haven, Connecticut finally settling in the Bronx, NYC. Frances was a supportive and caring friend to many and was known for her exceptional culinary skills, her impeccable sense of style and fashion, and her strong liberal political views. She is survived by her daughter Lisa Gould, her son-in-law Bruce Gould, her grandchildren Rachel (Gould) Peacock and her husband Mark Peacock, Taryn Gould and Zachary Gould and two great grandchildren, Daniel and Hannah Peacock. She also leaves behind sisters-in-laws Roz Goldman and Bea Goldman and several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. A graveside service and burial will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Fairview, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice or to the Florence and Sheldon Gould Community Health Improvement Fund at the UConn Foundation, PO Box 843948, Boston, MA 02284-2948. The family will be sitting shiva in Cary, North Carolina.
