Evelyn (Shimelman) Zeman

Evelyn Shimelman Zeman, 94, of West Hartford, wife of the late William Saxe Zeman, died June 16, 2008. Born in Hartford, August 15, 1913, she was the daughter of Abraham and Bessie (Greenberg) Shimelman. She was educated in the Hartford public schools, and graduated as valedictorian of her Weaver High School class of 1931. She received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1935 and her B.S. in Social Work from Simmons College in 1936. She was a senior case worker for the State of Connecticut, Bureau of Old Age Assistance for several years. She was president of the Ladies? Deborah Society of Temple Beth Israel, which performed social services for the community, and was president of the Morley School P.T.A. Her philanthropic work also included serving as president of the Greater Hartford Community Council, 1966-1968, board member of the United Way, 1966-1970, and member of the Brainard Fund Advisory Committee. In 1969, she was the recipient of the Community Service Award of the Greater Hartford Community Chest. She was a member of the Town and County Club. She also trained as a paralegal and worked actively with her husband until his retirement in 2000. In addition to her husband of 71 years, she was predeceased by her brother, Morton Shimelman. She is survived by her three children, Peter, Andrew, and Mary Ann Zeman, three grandchildren, Jeffery, Karen, and William Zeman, and two great-grandchildren, Sean and Matthew Zeman. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Selma Shimelman. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 20, 2008, at 11 am in the chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, with Rabbi Michael Pincus officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Mrs. Zeman?s family invites friends to call at the Town and County Club, 22 Woodland Street, Hartford, on Friday after the service from 12:30 to 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of the donor?s choice.
