Evelyn ?Bobby? (Sagan) Shapiro, 89, of West Hartford, widow of Murry Shapiro, died Monday, March 15, 2010. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Jeanne (Rosenzweig) Sagan. Bobby was a graduate of Philadelphia High School for Girls, class of January 1938. She received her undergraduate degree from West Chester State (PA) Teachers College (now West Chester State University) and a Masters Degree from St. Joseph?s College, West Hartford. Her career in education spanned 50 years, primarily in the West Hartford public school system, as a first grade teacher in the former King Philip Elementary School, and as a special education teacher. After retirement from the West Hartford public schools, Bobby was a faculty member at Westfield (MA) State College. She was a life member of Hadassah, and a long time member of Beth El Temple, West Hartford where she served on the Education Committee for many years. She leaves her sons: Paul Shapiro and his wife Annette of Storrs, and Aaron Shapiro and his partner Susan Rosenbaum of Portland, ME, a beloved grandson, Sam Shapiro, and a devoted brother-in-law Dr. Norman Sengin. She was predeceased by her sisters Harriet Sengin and Lenore Sagan. Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Montefiore Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA. A memorial period will be observed on Sunday, March 21, 4-9 PM at the home of Al and Ronny Siegel, 16 Kirkwood Rd., West Hartford, and on Monday, March 22, 4-9 PM at the home of Paul and Annette Shapiro, 140 Davis Rd., Storrs 06268. The evening prayer service will be at 7:30 PM both nights. The family would like to express its thanks to Bobby?s caregiver, Patricia Cokes, who was deeply committed to her care. The family also thanks both VNA Masonicare Hospice as well as the staff of St. Mary Home for their kindness and care during Bobby?s last few months of life.
