Emmy (Ziegelstein) Weinstein

Emmy Ziegelstein Weinstein of West Hartford, was born July 9, 1913 in Sterzhausen, Germany to Solly and Minna (Eisenberg) Ziegelstein. Alarmed by Hitler’s rise to power, Emmy, in 1933 at age twenty, fled Germany, urging her parents to accompany her - to no avail. Her parents’ and her grandmother were murdered in the Riga concentration camp by the Nazis. She was a salesperson in the Lerner Shop in Hartford for twenty years and was a longtime member of Congregation Tikvoh Chadoshoh. Throughout her lifetime, Emmy was an independent and private person. Emmy was predeceased by her husband, Fritz, in 1959, and by her beloved sister, Erna, in 1973. She is survived by her son, Raymond (Gail) of West Hartford, and her two grandsons, Alan (Pauline Cohen) and Philip (Joelle Rubin), both of New York City. She is also survived by a devoted niece, Miriam (Norman) Fleischman of West Hartford. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Mary’s Home for the kindness and caring they have given Emmy for the past two years. The funeral will be TODAY, Monday, April 20, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT. Rabbi Philip Lazowski will officiate. Shiva will be observed at the home of her son through Sunday morning, April 26, 2009.
