Emanuel Rosenthal, 96, of Hartford, CT, formerly of Rocky Hill and New Britain, passed away on Feb. 5, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Emily (Neubauer) Rosenthal for 68 years. Emanuel, known as Manny, owned Lifshutz department store in New Britain and later Kamins department store in Glastonbury. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of New Britain and the West Hartford Regents. Manny was an avid golfer and a fan of UConn basketball, the Red Sox and Mets. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Bessie (Schwadron) Rosenthal. He graduated from City College of New York and served in the U.S. Army 83rd Division Artillery during World War II, seeing action in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster after being wounded in the campaign to liberate Europe. In addition to his wife, Manny is survived by his son Dave Rosenthal and his wife, Suzy, of Buffalo, NY; two daughters, Patricia Josephs of Bristol and Diane Rosenthal Thomas and her husband Douglas of West Hartford. “Pop” adored spending time with his eight grandchildren: Jack and his wife Kate, Anne Rosenthal; Will, Katie and Matt Thomas; Steve Josephs, Sarah (Josephs) Hun, Eric Josephs; and three great-grandchildren, Kyle and Cailyn Josephs, and Anna Couturier. He is also survived by his brother, Bernie Rosenthal and his wife Barbara, and sister, Claire Greenberg. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joe and Bob.
The funeral will be held at noon on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Weinstein Mortuary Chapel, 640 Farmington Ave, Hartford. Burial will follow at 1 pm at the State Veterans’ Cemetery in Middletown. The family will receive guests from 6:30-8:30 pm on Thursday in the Adams Room at Avery Heights, 705 New Britain Ave., Hartford.
